China's fertility fell under a voluntary family planning program rolled out from about 1969. It had already halved by the time the one-child policy came along, and the latter made no demonstrable difference to the fertility decline (it may even have slowed it). Nobody needs a China-style one-child policy - it's an abomination, it's ineffective and it's unnecessary.

Parts of India also had very effective family planning promotion, but nationally India has dropped the ball lately. Ridiculous pronouncements have come from politicians in favour of boosting births. And the welcome end to 'sterilisation camps' has not been replaced with effective other measures such as promotion of modern long-acting, reversible contraceptives (LARCs). Lots can be done, without resorting to a 'one-child policy'.

India has achieved below-replacement fertility in most southern States but not in Muslim majority States. See http://iussp.org/sites/all/modules/contrib/civicrm/extern/url.php?u=1792&qid=713994 These states of the south are developing well - contrary to the insistence of Indian leaders, it is reduced population growth that enables development, not development that stimulates fertility decline. But these States constantly carry the drag of immigration from northern states. People are justified to resent this influx, which does indeed diminish the prospects for their children's future economic security. Especially when the 'infiltration' is bringing other religion, values and demands on governance systems, transforming civic life against the wishes of endemic people. The saddest part is that such influxes are often a reason to try to out-breed the interlopers, a solution constituting mutually-assured destruction.

Saral, I'm struck by the contrast with your blogs of some time back, which refused to countenance containing population growth as a reason for limiting immigration into Europe. Mass migration can never be a solution to inequality, it just stimulates population growth in both sending and receiving countries, to the destruction of both.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15265584206185061916noreply@blogger.com
